Climbing at Ramapo Powerlinez, New York

Ramapo Powerlinez (located along the southwest corner of Harriman State Park) is close to NYC, and I mean really close, a drive out from brooklyn took us just under an hour. There are a ton of boulder problems, trad routes and good top rope options to be found but there is a caveat, you will need to set your own “natural anchors” since most of the climbs do not have fixed bolts/chains. But don’t let this detour you, if you don’t already have the know how now may be the time to up those anchoring skills or find someone who can help. The rock here is good to climb with a feel of something in between rough and maybe even sharp, great for friction. Most of the walls are around 50ft or below but what they lack in height they make up for in variety. You can find routes of all ratings through out the area, in some cases 5.6 routes right along side a 5.11 or higher.

There is a parking lot near by and a little bit of hiking/ navigating to reach the walls but that’s all part of the fun when outdoors. A good resource to find some good climbs before you go is Mountain Project, they have a wealth of information for climbers.
